Virginia Beach, Virginia

Oct. 9-18, 2014
Holiday Trav-l Park
Virginia Beach, VA

We left Alexandria, New York and headed south on I-81 to spend the night in Pennsylvania.  The next day we pass through 13 miles of Maryland, 30 miles of West Virginia and into Virginia.  We spent the night and continued our journey to Virginia Beach the next day.  We arrived at Holiday Trav-l Park to be greeted by these two characters and the sign below.

It seems we arrived on the Columbus Day weekend and the park was doing a Halloween camping weekend complete with hay rides, costume contests and scary movies.  There were children everywhere dressed for the occasion.  Becky called her sister to tell her we had arrived at Halloween central.  Sister Janet grabbed a bag of candy and came over to help us give out treats at dusk.  We had  kids drop by for treats while Janet and Becky had a great time catching up with family news.

Sisters Becky Hazen and Janet Aslett

We enjoyed a family dinner complete with campfire and s'mores with Kyrstle and nephew Aarron Aslett, niece Alison Donahue, Pete and daughter Emma.

Nothing like the smell of burning marshmallows.

Becky and Janet scheduled a pedi for two.

We also went out to Red Lobster to celebrate sister Janet's birthday.

Becky's niece took us out to see her horse Vega.

We enjoyed giving treats to Vega.

We took a day to see the Virginia Aquarium.  This is a sea sturgeon.

Komodo Dragon

Egyptian Cobra

Jelly fish

Viewed a Sting Ray from below.  They are kinda cute.

The Sea otters gave us a good show.

Interesting plants we have not seen before.

Lots of sea birds
Today we took a Harbor tour of Norfolk's Elizabeth River Harbor.

The Battleship Wisconsin is available for tours at the Nauticus National Maritime Center.

There were 3 different container operations, one Coal operation that brings in coal on railroad cars for shipping and one warehouse that ships locomotive engines around the world.

Of course the high light of the tour was the Naval fleet.

Hospital ship ready to go where it's needed.

Today's battleships are very different with all the computerized weapons.

There was one submarine in dock.  It was a little hard to see behind the fence.

This is a new ship that cost $2 billion dollars to build.

We all loved the aircraft carriers as tall as a 24 story building.

Battle ships have a whole new shape.

This was a ship full of grain headed out to Cuba.

Tomorrow we leave Virginia Beach headed south with destination unknown.  We will fill you in on where we landed when we get there.

Becky and Lonnie
