Revolutionary War Trail

Monday, Sept. 22, 2014
Littleton, MA
Minuteman Campground

Sunday was spent watching football and doing laundry as it rained all day.  This morning dawned without a cloud in the sky so it's time to go explore the area.  We chose to visit the Lexington/Concord area for Revolutionary War History.

We jumped on the Liberty Ride Trolley tour at the Lexington Visitors Center.  Our guide, dressed in period clothing, narrated the events of April 18, 1775 and the literary legacy that defined American identity and culture.  This 90 minute tour took us along the Battle Road from Lexington to Concord.

This was the location of the Hancock-Clarke house that was Paul Revere and William Dawes destination on the night of April 18, 1775 to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock of the coming British groups.

As well as visits to the birthplace of American liberty, we were treated to views of homes of 19th century literature.  This was the home of Louisa May Alcott and the setting for the beloved Little Women.

The Old Manse was home of minister William Emerson, his grandson Ralph Waldo Emerson.  It was also the honeymoon home of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne.  There are also tours of the Emerson house with it's original furnishings and family memorabilia but we didn't make it there.

This marker was placed by the British for their soldiers that died in the battle at North Bridge.  Each year a representative from England comes to place flags at the grave.

This statue was to commemorate the militia men that fell in the first battle of the  Revolution War.

The North Bridge

The stream that runs under the bridge is beautiful.

The Militia was hidden in these hills on the far side of the bridge and ambushed the British.

Trail to the North Bridge.

We got a much better understanding of the war that was the birthplace of American Liberty.  We stopped at the Minute Man National Historical Park Visitors Center to view "The Road to Revolution" a moving multimedia presentation and exhibits to further enhance our day.  This pretty much filled our day so back to the campground we went in 5:00 traffic.  It took a while.
